Verdi Library Changes Hours

Verdi Library’s hours are changing.  Starting January 4, 2016, the library’s Wednesday hours will shift 30 minutes earlier.  Current hours are 3pm to 7pm; new hours will be 2:30pm to 6:30pm.  Saturday hours will remain unchanged.

The Washoe Community Library Board voted to approve the change in hours in order to encourage greater usage.  Verdi Elementary releases students at 2:30pm on Wednesdays; aligning the library’s hours with the school’s hours will (hopefully) result in increased usage.

Parents of Verdi Elementary students are highly encouraged to take advantage of the new hours to visit the library on Wednesdays.  Sustained increased usage is the only way we will be able to keep our community library open!

Why is it that the Verdi Library left the elementary school, and now that the County struggles to fund this library “outside” of the school district; does it not just go back to the school where is belongs, for the kids?

The library’s services are provided by three different sources, for three different purposes:
      1) The school district owns the library and provides library services during school hours to the school students. This is not going away.
      2) The county library system provides public hours on Wednesday and Saturday for everyone. This is the access that is in jeopardy. The county cannot continue to provide manpower, IT infrastructure support, and materials if they don’t receive adequate return on their investment (customer count and usage).
      3) NDOW uses the meeting room to provide hunter safety training. This is not going away.
One concern for the school is that if the county pulls its resources then the school will lose direct access to them. This would put the students at a disadvantage when compared to the resources available at school libraries with greater funding than Verdi Elementary Library’s funding.
